I’ll let you in on a secret. It takes me forever to publish posts because I’m hopelessly compulsive about getting them perfect before I do. Consequently, I am almost a month behind real-time. So in an attempt to keep things up to date, posts are going to get sloppy and possibly incoherent from this point on. So here is a collection of some of the random crazy things seen and heard in the last 3 months (Yes, it’s been 3 months!):
• Kids cheering as they found out their homeroom teachers for this year.
• Boys going ‘Waaaaaaa!’ as the new young female high school Korean teacher was introduced at assembly.
• In the Year 3 ‘What is this?’ lesson, I pick up a screwdriver. A cute little girl mutters in Korean and indicates with a two finger poke up the ass gesture ‘dongjim!’
• Getting dongjim-ed by my year 8 boys at the ceramics centre
• On the bus during the field trip to Seoul, Eun-gi comes over to talk to someone, then as he’s walking away, Tae-young nonchantly pokes a finger up Eun-gi’s butt and he reacts equally nonchalantly, like it’s an everyday occurrence.
• Seong-jae (a Year 8 boy) saying ‘You.... ahh....teacher.... ...good body.....Ohhh... Yah!’ ‘Teacher I love you’ and always hugging me for uncomfortable lengths of time
• Su-hyeok saying thank you after everything he says like it’s the end of a speech
• Drunk ajuma on a hike on Nami Island falling off the back of the bench and her friends leaving her there, then shouting at her.
• Crazy Korean man shouting at us on the Seoul subway. Intense
• Some Year 4 kid draws penises in another kid’s bingo square and everyone around him starts laughing.
• A Year 9 boy draws penises on his worksheet. I say ‘Don’t do that, man’. Literally 5 seconds later, I turn around and he is doing it again. I shake my head. I walk away to help another student, in my line of sight he catches my eye. Guess what he is doing again? Sigh.
• In the after school class, we are drawing and talking about our dream house. A different Year 9 boy draws a massive penis shaped house. Another kid has a ‘fighting room’ and ‘gun practice room’. Yeahhhhh.
• Girl students saying ‘sunsaengnim aaahh eottteeookkeee?!’, ‘Nae!’ and bowing in that cute way
• Asking why it’s always Go Un who sweeps the staff room floor. And Mrs Oh saying ‘....ohh... it’s his... job...’ lol
